Spider Veins

Spider Veins

Spider veins are the fine red to purple veins that are usually very small and can look very much like a bruised spot. They can take on different shapes such as fan-shaped, linear, starburst, and spider web designs.

Spider veins are the smallest type of varicose vein and are usually only a cosmetic concern since they are generally medically insignificant, but may be painful for some people. They lie very close to the surface of the skin, and although they are connected to the larger venous system they are not essential to it. It is estimated that about 50 percent of adult females are affected with spider veins. Spider veins can be treated in the office with injections called sclerotherapy.
